Wild Is the Wind issued by La-La Land Records

wildisthewind-coverLa-La Land Records, Paramount Pictures, and Sony Music present the world premiere CD release of Dimitri Tiomkin’s score for Wild Is the Wind.

Shipping now, the two-CD set features Tiomkin’s original motion picture score to the 1957 Paramount film. It is available at a retail price of US$19.95, in an edition limited to 2,500 units.

Wild Is the Wind, produced by Hal B. Wallis and directed by George Cukor, features Anna Magnani, Anthony Quinn, and Anthony Franciosa.

One disc contains the original soundtrack, including several passages dialed out of the film prior to release, and a second disc contains tracks specifically recorded for a Columbia Records soundtrack LP in conjunction with the film’s release in 1957.

The original score musicians for the LP are listed in the booklet, with familiar names such as Nathan Kaproff and Aida Dagort. Dagort also played for Bernard Herrmann, Erich Wolfgang Korngold, Max Steiner, and Franz Waxman as she recounts in her 1997 autobiography, “Harps Are Not for Angels.”

A young Jimmie Haskel was on accordion. Barely in his twenties, the session musician went on to a lengthy and noted career as a television composer and music arranger. At the  piano was budding film composer Harry Sukman. This was around the time he was scoring Forty Guns for director Samuel Fuller, and a few years before Sukman would walk away with an Academy Award statuette for scoring Song without End (The Story of Franz Liszt). Sukman and Tiomkin were lifelong friends.
